RECLAIMING OUR FUTURE: Addressing Immigration & Brain Drain in South-Med Countries

The two-day conference on immigration and brain drain in the South Mediterranean region was successfully organized by We Can Create Change (We3C). It brought together a diverse group of policymakers, academics, NGOs, and community leaders to address the complex socio-economic challenges caused by the migration of skilled professionals.

Over the course of the event, participants engaged in insightful keynote addresses that outlined the global landscape of informal immigration and brain drain, as well as detailed case studies, such as the example of Tunisia, that highlighted local realities.

Panel discussions and workshops provided a platform to analyze existing legal frameworks and policy responses, while interactive group sessions allowed attendees to share community perspectives, including the impact of climate change, security concerns, and socio-economic factors. The conference emphasized collaboration across governments, NGOs, and the private sector to develop sustainable economic opportunities and improve education and training systems tailored to the unique contexts of the South Mediterranean.

Ultimately, the event fostered a shared understanding of the root causes and far-reaching consequences of brain drain and informal immigration. Through collective action planning, participants drafted a call to action focused on equitable development and talent retention, aiming to build a more stable, innovative, and prosperous future for the region. The conference concluded with commitments to continued collaboration and partnership-building among stakeholders.
